Attentional Intentions
Certain classes of questions are interpreted very strangely by AI. One such question is:
Is 9.11 > 9.8?
In nearly all known cases on major platforms, this question results in some form of ‘yes’ followed by emphatic assertion of its mathematical validity; AI conflates strong associations with historical events, gravitational constant, clock times, calendar dates, String length, mathematical precision, place value, and many more. RIP opens with a flurry of basic but powerful directives to grab the attention of an AI at cold start. It demands a quiet acknowledgment to minimize variation of the AIs understanding, increase repeatability, and help the AI self-internalize RIP as implicit principles instead of an explicit rule set (Claude). RIP aims for mathematical rigor because it accelerates the transfer of intent, but it also overloads and backfires. RIP is ultimately an ‘attention hack’, meant to sub-symbolically direct the AI towards self-correction and preferred outcomes.
RIP boasts a solid success rate for this question on all major AI platforms. Occasionally, it starts wrong and self-corrects halfway through. In addition to that, should the AI reach the wrong conclusion on the first attempt, a single ‘Are you sure?’ will often be enough to get them back on track, even if they start by asserting their own correctness in both cases.
RIP induces this atypical behavior, and its effect strengthens as the conversation progresses. Without RIP, or explicit mentions, major AI platforms will proceed to die on their ‘9.11 > 9.8’ hill, carrying it and other such errors forward in perpetuity.
